What Are the Warning Signs of a Heart Attack?

A heart attack, also known as a myocardial infarction, occurs when the blood flow to a part of the heart is blocked for a long enough time that part of the heart muscle is damaged or dies. Recognizing the warning signs of a heart attack can save lives. Here are some key symptoms to watch out for:

Common Warning Signs

  1. Chest Discomfort: This is the most common symptom of a heart attack. It can feel like uncomfortable pressure, squeezing, fullness, or pain in the center of the chest. This discomfort may last more than a few minutes or go away and come back.
  2. Discomfort in Other Areas of the Upper Body: Symptoms can include pain or discomfort in one or both arms, the back, neck, jaw, or stomach.
  3. Shortness of Breath: This can occur with or without chest discomfort. It might feel like you can’t catch your breath or are struggling to breathe.
  4. Cold Sweats: Breaking out in a cold sweat is a common symptom. This can happen suddenly and without any obvious cause.
  5. Nausea or Vomiting: Feeling sick to your stomach or actually vomiting can be a sign of a heart attack, especially in women.
  6. Lightheadedness or Dizziness: Feeling faint or dizzy can be a warning sign, particularly if it occurs with any of the other symptoms.
  7. Unusual Fatigue: This is another symptom more common in women. Feeling unusually tired for no reason can be a sign of a heart attack.

Heart Attack Symptoms in Women

While chest pain is the most common symptom for both men and women, women are more likely to experience some of the other symptoms, such as shortness of breath, nausea/vomiting, and back or jaw pain. These symptoms can be more subtle and may not always be recognized as a heart attack.

What to Do If You Experience Symptoms

If you or someone else is experiencing any of these symptoms, it’s crucial to act quickly. Call 911 immediately. Do not drive yourself to the hospital. Emergency medical services (EMS) can begin treatment on the way to the hospital, which can be lifesaving.
